1. Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax

The first post of IRS is assistant commissioner of the income tax department. At this post, the officer gets 15600/- to 39100/- as per month salary and 5400/- as grade pay. 

2. Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax

The salary of a deputy commissioner is similar to an assistant commissioner. The grade pay amount is 6600/-. 

3. Joint Commissioner of Income Tax

Joint commissioner salary also ranges between 15600/- to 39100/-. They get 7600/- as the grade pay amount. 

4. Additional Commissioner of Income Tax

An additional commissioner IRS officer salary is 37400/- to 67000/-. The high paid post also includes 8700/- as grade pay. 

5. Commissioner of Income Tax

The commissioner of the income tax department receives 37400/- to 67000/- as their per month salary from the Indian government. The grade pay amount also increases according to the post, as the commissioner gets 10000/- as grade pay. 

6. Principal Commissioner of Income Tax

The principal commissioner is the third top post of Indian revenue services, and the candidate gets 67000/- to 79000/- per month salary on this post. The Indian government didn’t offer grade pay to the top three posts of the IRS. 

7. Chief Commissioner of Income Tax

Indian government provides 75500/- to 80000/- as per month salary to the chief commissioner of income tax. Grade pay is not available for the chief commissioner. 

8. Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax

The principal chief commissioner is the highest-ranked post of the income tax department, and the salary of this post is 80000/- fixed. 

Exams Details

The IRS exams are one of the toughest exams conducted by UPSC, which goes on almost every year. Just like the IAS, it also has three parts. The first round is known as the prelims round, which holds two different exam rounds. Each round is of 200 marks. 

The second part of the exam is the mains round, which contains 16 papers of 250 marks each and two papers of 300 marks. If the candidate clears these two parts, then he or she will be eligible for the interview round.

  • Eligibility

The candidates have to check the eligibility criteria before applying for the UPSC exams. For IRS civil services, candidates need to complete their graduation from a government recognized college. However, the age limit is 21 to 30 for applying Indian revenue services.
